Review: Macdonald Tickled Trout, Preston

Mrs Silver Surfer and I found ourselves needing to stay in Preston a few weeks back, and a quick trawl on Hotels.com (via Quidco to get cashback on top of hotels.com rewards!) found a great deal at The Macdonald Tickled Trout nearby (just off the M6 services) at £60 for a Twin room including breakfast for 2!

Check in was nice and easy with friendly receptionist, be warned though the hotel is huge and in our case it was quite a walk to our room on the 2nd floor (there is a lift although strangely that is down a few steps!).

The room itself was a good size with a nice ensuite, good quality bedding, flat screen TV and the usual tea and coffee making facilites (ask at reception for more tea if needed!

Our room was to the back of the hotel and had a lovely view of the river ribble

The room was really quiet and comfortable and we both slept really well. Before we retired for the evening we needed to eat and luckily the Macdonald Tickled Trout has an excellent restaurant on site and we booked a table on check in (advised as can get busy!). Having browsed the menu we both settled on their set menu “come dine with us” which offered a 3 course set menu of Prawn cocktail followed by Steak with chips and peppercorn sauce with Black forest Gateaux for desert (on the evening in question gateaux was not available so we had an alternative) for £30 or two course for £25 – we opted for the two course and it was really nice with good service (although I would say the chips were on the overdone side) – I chose a nice cold pint of Greene King IPA with mine to help wind down after a long and stressful day while Mrs Surfer had a sensible diet coke followed by a Tia Maria and coke as a rare treat 😀

Having had a couple of drinks and a nice meal we sent ourselves to bed with the alarm set for 8am for breakfast

Breakfast was continental style self service cereals, toast, pastries etc (make your own tea, coffee, juice followed by cooked breakfast from a menu, Cooked breakfast was of good quality although unlike the previous nights chips was erring on the side of being under-cooked but was nice nevertheless and was served in a nice setting.

On checkout we were overcharged by £10 (charged for 3 course rather than 2 course meal) which was a bit annoying – i’m sure it’s an easy mistake to make but from the customers perspective also easy to not realise you’ve paid £10 too much! The mistake was rectified and I would definitely stay at the Macdonald Tickled Trout again in the future!
